Paramedics and firefighters from the Ventura County Fire Department safely delivered a baby while rushing the mother to the hospital in the back of an ambulance Thursday.

The fire department received a call that morning to assist a patient who was suspected of being in labor on an off-ramp connected to the southbound 23 Freeway.

When paramedics and firefighters arrived on scene, they helped the patient into the back of an ambulance and began rushing her to the hospital.

The paramedics delivered Andres, the name given to the newborn, while the ambulance sped down the freeway.

Both the baby and mother were safely taken to the emergency room.

The firefighters who responded to the call returned to the hospital later in the day to congratulate Andres and his mother on his arrival.
