The city of West Hollywood Friday continued to put the finishing touches on a new housing complex for the homes as it converted an old motel on Santa Monica Boulevard near La Cienega Boulevard into temporary housing.
After the city received a grant in 2022 and bought the hotel, the building has been under construction to add 20 rooms of temporary housing where people can stay up to 90 days.
We need more housing as a region in order to solve this crisis,” West Hollywood Mayor Chelsea Byers said. “And every new bed that opens in a pathway to that happening.”
Byers said the new building will provide access to services such as mental health care, financial literacy training as well as employment and housing support.
“We’re going to have 24/7 staff on site, making sure that people are successful as they navigate this program, getting the services and support that they need,” she said.
While some neighbors said they are not excited about having more homeless people coming to the West Hollywood area for safety concerns, others said they hoped the housing will lead to permanent housing for people in need.
“There are a lot of buildings throughout the city, West Hollywood and LA, that are derelict,” Andy Schreiber, who lives near the motel, said. “They can get their lives together so that they can get back into the community in a way that’s healthier for them.”
The city was scheduled to have an open house with its non-profit partner Ascenia, which will be providing mental health services as officials already began identifying those who can potentially stay at the new facility as early as October.
