Mayor Karen Bass delivered an update Wednesday on a cleanup project at the Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area, a venue for several events when the Olympics come to Los Angeles for a third time in 2028.
The sprawling recreation area in the west San Fernando Valley will be home to four events in 2028, marking the first time competitions will be in the Valley. The area has long been plagued by overgrown brush, homeless encampments, illegal dumping and brush fires.
Bass was scheduled to deliver an update on addressing those matters and more at a 9:45 a.m. news conference in neighboring Encino.

Bass proposed a strategy last year aimed at solving long-standing problems in the area.
In January after a brush fire near the Sepulveda Basin, Bass released a statement indicating fire calls to the area had decreased.
“Last July, I launched a comprehensive and coordinated strategy to address longstanding challenges in the Sepulveda Basin centered on public safety – and we’re seeing results,” Bass said. “LAFD has reported a significant decrease in the call volume for fires in the Sepulveda Basin, large amounts of debris and vegetation that increase fire risk have been removed, and we continue providing outreach to people experiencing homelessness.”
In 1932 and 1984, the San Fernando Valley watched from the sidelines when Los Angeles hosted the Olympics. Not this time.
The Sepulveda Basin and Lake Balboa will share the spotlight, hosting BMX, skateboarding, pentathlon and 3-on-3 basketball.
The Valley Zone is divided into four complexes at the Sepulveda Basin Recreation area for five Olympic sports and disciplines. Complex 1 is a temporary open-air venue for BMW freestyle and skateboarding events. Complex 2 in the basin will be a temporary venue for modern pentathlon and skateboarding. Complex 3 will host 3×3 basketball, providing an octagonal viewing area for spectators. In Complex 4, BMX racers will soar over the natural terrain of the area.
