The last time you whistled in the shower or warbled along to your favorite pop song, you might have thought you had what it takes to be a “master” whistler.
Luckily, those interested in finding out have the opportunity to see for themselves at the “Masters of Musical Whistling” festival in Hollywood.
The event hosts whistlers from around the world, giving beginners and masters alike a chance to showcase their skills through different levels, divisions and genres of competition.
One attendee, Ryan Engstrom, said that he was an amateur whistler at one point, but was convinced by some friends to take it more seriously.
“People kept telling me, ‘You should do a competition, because you’re really good,’” Engstrom said.
Derek Bodkin is a world champion whistler and an instructor at this year’s festival.
“Try to have fun with it,” Bodkin said. “Don’t take yourself too seriously.”
Beginning Friday and ending on Sunday, the festival at the Barnsdall Gallery Theater is open to the public and is holding practices for those looking to improve their whistling techniques.
Tickets to the competitions are still available online, and a major concert is planned for Sunday.
