A 52-year-old woman was arrested in connection with the discovery of a body found inside a burned car last month at a South Los Angeles tow yard, police announced Thursday.
The body was found Sept 9 in a blue Honda Civic in a lot located west of Western Avenue near Gage Street. The rear of the Honda appeared to have fire damage.
Detectives with the LAPD’s Missing Persons Unit responded to the yard. It was not immediately clear when or why the Honda was brought to the tow yard.
On Sept. 16, search warrants were served at two locations in connection with the investigation, police said. Officers arrested Sandra Romo Diaz, of Los Angeles, on suspicion of murder.
Two days later, one count of murder was filed by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
It was not immediately clear whether Diaz has an attorney who could speak on her behalf. Further details about the investigation and a cause of death were not immediately available.
Bond was set at $2 million, according to jail records. An initial court date was scheduled for Friday.
The body was the second in two days discovered inside cars at Los Angeles tow yards. Earlier that week, police said a body was found in a bag inside a Tesla owned by singer D4vd at a tow yard in Hollywood.
The remains were identified as 15-year-old Celeste Rivas. The Tesla had been abandoned in the Hollywood Hills for an extended period before it was towed to an official police impound lot.
A representative for the singer has said that his client is cooperating with the investigation.
