Los Angeles County fire crews and Avalon sheriff deputies responded to an area near the Catalina Island casino after receiving reports of a woman in distress.
A woman in her early 60’s and a male friend of hers were diving about 25-yards-off shore, near the Casino Point underwater park. The pair started coming back to the shore when the woman started showing signs of distress.
As the man brought her ashore, witnesses called 911 and helped the man render aid. Paramedics transported her to a medical center on the island, but unfortunately, she was pronounced deceased.
The man was also evaluated by paramedics, but did not require any medical treatment.
The LA County Medical Examiner’s office, who is still working to determine the official cause and manner of death, has identified the woman as 64-year-old Carolyn Alvarez. Foul play is not suspected.
